British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
